Confession: This hymn was not one of my favorites. As a church organist, I know that whenever we sing this hymn, I’m going to have to play it on repeat after the congregation is done singing while the sacrament is still being prepared. (I think my record is five times after the singing was done.🫠)

But not too long ago, a cute sister missionary sent a picture in her weekly email of a beautiful green field with a cross in the distance. She said how much she loved walking past that field because it always made her think of the hymn “There Is a Green Hill Far Away.”

It made me pause and reflect.

Perhaps I had missed something in this hymn that I hadn’t noticed before.

As I read through the lyrics I realized how profound and full of simple, beautiful doctrine they were.

I did my best to capture that feeling in each of the different verses.

I now love this hymn and what it teaches. And the next time we sing it in sacrament meeting and I have to keep playing it on repeat, I will be thinking of a distant hill with a cross, and what that cross means for me.
